Adale Sholock, PhD

Adale Sholock is the inaugural community engagement manager in the Center for Race & Gender Equity at YWCA Greater Pittsburgh. Adale serves on a variety of YW initiatives, including those centered on pay equity and racial healing. She especially loves organizing the Center for Race & Gender Equity’s monthly discussion series called Action Conversations on Race. Adale is also an assistant professor in the Community Engagement Program at Point Park University where she teaches a course on feminist theory.

Adale previously worked at YWCA Greater Pittsburgh in the Center for Race and Gender Equity as a diversity trainer from 2006-2007. During her time away from YWCA, Adale continued with the mission of eliminating racism and empowering women in a variety of roles. She was the director of the Women’s Center at Vanderbilt University and the director of the Women’s Center at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Adale also served as a faculty member in women’s and gender studies at West Chester University, Chatham University, and Beloit College. Her teaching and research focus on anti-racist, feminist, and LGBTQ+ social justice movements. 

A native of rural, southwestern Pennsylvania, Adale is happy to be back in Pittsburgh after living in Philadelphia and Nashville for many years. She holds a Ph.D. in women’s studies from Binghamton University, State University of New York; a MA in English from the University of Tulsa; and a BA in English (women’s studies minor) from Chatham University.
